The Police Intellectual Property Crime Unit (PIPCU) welcomed Members of Parliament to the unit’s offices at the City of London Police this week. The unit was first joined by Shadow Minister of State for Policing, Jack Dromey MP followed by members from the All-Party Parliamentary Intellectual Property (IP) Group; Chair John Whittingdale OBE MP, Lord Clement Jones and the Prime Minister’s new adviser on IP Mike Weatherley MP. The MP’s were given an insight to the unit and the groundbreaking work that has been taking place since the unit began 13 weeks ago. The Disruption and Prevention side of the team provided MP’s with an update on tackling websites providing unauthorised access to copyrighted content including Operation Creative, a pilot collaboration between PIPCU, the advertising sector and the creative industries hitting pirate site revenues. Officers from the unit’s Operational team then provided a brief overview of the latest operations carried out by PIPCU, including raids this week tackling counterfeit computer and mobile phone equipment being sold in shops across London and online, which resulted in four arrests. Detective Superintendent Bob Wishart said, “It’s great to have such a strong cross-party support to tackling intellectual property crime and we look forward to working with them all as we move into 2014.”
