Officers from City of London Police worked throughout the night to ensure two men, who were seen impersonating police officers, reached court within 24 hours and received a custodial sentence. Alexandru Radu aged 56, DOB 19/09/56 of No Fixed Abode and Nicolae Macovei aged 50, DOB 12/11/62 of No Fixed Abode were both charged today (21 March) with impersonating a police officer. They both appeared this afternoon at City of London Magistrates Court where they each received a 12 week custodial sentence. Background On Wednesday 20th March, officers, PC Michael O’Sullivan and PC Adam Green from the Crime Squad, were on patrol on New Bridge Street when they observed two men acting suspiciously. The officers continued to monitor the men and saw them approach two tourists who were asking for directions to the currency exchange. Radu then identified himself as a police officer to the tourists and in an attempt to gain their confidence he began to search his associate, Macovei, claiming to be looking for counterfeit currency. Fortunately, the tourists did not fall for this scam and walked away. The two men were arrested, and officers from the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) and Prisoner Handling Team (PHT) worked throughout the night to secure a sentencing the next day. Detective Inspector Dominic Parkin, said: “I am pleased with the swift work carried out by my officers in securing this sentencing, which has resulted in the removal of two men from the Square Mile who prey on vulnerable tourists.” This is a great result for City of London Police and should reassure the public of their determination to remove criminals from the Square Mile.
